When to visit Paris to avoid the crowds

Paris without tourists
No waiting at the top of the Eiffel Tower

Paris, the City of Light, attracts millions of visitors every year. However, crowds can make some visits less enjoyable. If you’d prefer to discover Paris without the hustle and bustle of the tourists, here are some practical tips for choosing the ideal time for your stay, as well as information on schedules, prices and climate.

1. The best times to avoid the crowds
Low season: The quietest time to visit Paris is in winter, between November and March. Temperatures are cooler, but there are fewer tourists. You’ll enjoy a less crowded city, with more accessible museums and fewer waits at the main attractions.

Mid-season: May and late September – early October are also good times to avoid the crowds. Although the weather is pleasant, parks and museums are less crowded than in summer.

Avoid summer: Paris is particularly crowded from June to August, with tourists from all over the world. Famous sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées are overrun, and hotel prices are at their highest.

2. Preferred opening times
Tourist sites: To visit popular monuments and museums, try to arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon, just before or after peak times (generally between 11am and 3pm). For example, the Eiffel Tower is less crowded when it opens at 9.00 am and after 7.00 pm.

Museums : The Louvre and Musée d’Orsay are less frequented early in the morning, just after opening, or in the evening, during the nocturne (some museums offer late opening hours on certain days of the week).

Popular neighborhoods: Places like Montmartre or the Marais can also be quieter in the early morning or evening, outside lunch and dinner times.

3. Climate and clothing
Winter (December to February): The weather is cold, with average temperatures around 5°C. It sometimes rains, so bring a warm coat and an umbrella. Days are shorter, and the city is less touristy, which makes for a more pleasant visit.

Spring (March to May): The climate is milder, with average temperatures between 10°C and 15°C. This is an ideal time to visit parks and gardens such as the Jardin des Tuileries. Visitor numbers start to rise in May, but remain reasonable.

Autumn (September to November): With temperatures between 12°C and 18°C, autumn is perfect for a quiet visit. The trees in the parks change color, creating a magical atmosphere. It’s also the season for cultural events, but without the summer influx of tourists.

4. Prices and accommodation
Hotels: In high season, hotel prices rise considerably. In low season (winter and early spring), you’ll find more affordable rates. For example, a night in a 3-star hotel can cost between €70 and €120 in winter, compared with €120 to €200 in summer.

Restaurants: Paris restaurants raise their prices during the tourist season. To avoid restaurant crowds, eat either early (12 noon to 1 p.m.) or late (7:30 p.m. and after).

5. Things to do to escape the crowds
Visit lesser-known neighborhoods: Explore areas like Canal Saint-Martin, Butte-aux-Cailles, or Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. These places are often overlooked by tourists and offer an authentic local atmosphere.

Turn away from the big tourist attractions: Rather than visiting the Eiffel Tower, try a leisurely cruise on the Seine, or visit lesser-known monuments such as the Arche de la Défense or the Conciergerie.

6. Conclusion
For a more relaxed stay in Paris, plan your visit during the low season (winter and spring), avoid rush hours and opt for less touristy times. That way, you’ll enjoy the beauty of Paris to the full, without the crowds. Enjoy your trip to the French capital!
